How Home Brew Calc works
The calculator turns ingredient sugar references into batch-level gravity and alcohol estimates.

Each ingredient is stored with a sugar reference per 100g or 100ml. When you add ingredients, the calculator converts those values into total fermentable sugar for the batch, then estimates original gravity from total sugar and target volume.
Ingredient builder method
- Pick fermentables and quantities in grams or millilitres.
- Convert each ingredient to an estimated sugar contribution.
- Combine total fermentable sugar across the recipe.
- Estimate OG from total sugar and batch volume.
- Estimate FG and ABV using the selected yeast attenuation and tolerance.
OG/FG mode
If you already have measured gravity readings, the site uses the standard homebrewing shortcut formula: (OG − FG) × 131.25. This is usually the more reliable method once fermentation data from the real batch is available.
Why estimates can differ from finished beer, mead, or cider
- Fruit composition changes by variety and ripeness.
- Mash efficiency varies across equipment and process.
- Fermentation can stop early if alcohol tolerance is exceeded.
- Residual sugar and dilution decisions affect the final measured gravity.
